Why So Timid?

12 Sep 2019

Fortune favours the brave, or so it goes.

Fear is a natural part of being human.

Fear in and of itself is never the issue because fear, by design, is actually there to keep you alive.

But it’s the distortion of fear and the fear response that cripples you.

That takes a grip your soul and crushes it.

That stunts your growth and dims your light.

That keeps you locked up, tied to only what’s familiar and seemingly safe.

But herein lies the irony,

You succumb to fear because it's meant to keep you safe, but in the end, its crippling fear that actually kills you.

Not just your body, as it decays in the dark, but also kills your spirit.

The point then is not to rid your self of fear, because it has utility, but rather to develop and live with more courage, by stepping out and in to the things you fear most

To familiarise yourself with the unfamiliar

To build your confidence and competence

And understand that fear can be conquered, but only by being brave.

For there is no courage in the absence of fear

So then, it's important to realise, that when you find yourself hesitating, when you’re timid, holding yourself back for some made up reason you've convinced yourself to be true.

That’s not you conquering fear, but rather fear conquering you.

So in that sense, it's true, fortune does in fact favour the brave.

It’s important then, to be able to look at the world and see it for what it is.

To refrain from projecting your own fears and insecurities onto your condition by creating fantastical false narratives, generating a sense of clear and present danger where non exists.

By identifying your fears and you’ve actually identified your purpose.

Use them both as the guide and the springboard to knock down all the barriers you’ve created within yourself.

By taking a step forward

Stepping towards those things that you fear most

Towards those things you’ve been avoiding and those things you’ve been hesitating to do.

Finally pulling the trigger and stepping out of the cave you’ve been hiding in and into the world and all it has to offer.

All the lessons it has to teach you

Knowing full well that there’s a risk in doing so

Knowing full well that things may not turn out how you expect them to

Knowing full well that there will be challenges ahead

But its ok,

Because all the while knowing you also know full well, that you’ve chosen life and all its trappings, over dying a slow death.
