Finding Purpose

4 Apr 2019

Your mind functions in such a way, that it needs to be working towards something.

It needs clear direction, clear objectives, a reason to wake up in the morning and go at it.

The interplay between meaning and purpose is what will essentially keep you going.

It’s what keeps you feeling alive, without it, you’re likely (over time) to regress into a nihilistic state of nothingness.

Despondent, depressed, dejected, trying to decipher the point of it all.

Why bother, why even try?

It’s a dark and heavy place to live from, like digging yourself into a hole, unable to find your way out.

Purpose is that one thing that can get you going again.

It’s that light at the end of the tunnel, the eternal hope that keeps your flame alive, without it, the very fabric and essence of life becomes increasingly meaningless.

What you need to begin realising, is that you can actually establish purpose.

It’s really not that complicated.

But in order to do so, you’re going to have to challenge yourself and do some things you may not feel like doing, that's the the trade off.

And then let that purpose drive you.

Purpose transcends emotion, it keeps you going, even when you don't feel like it.

Purpose has never been about living an easy life, even if that’s your intended goal, there’s no real purpose embedded in it.

Purpose is active, not passive.

It’s about elevating yourself, growing, pushing through and moving forward.

It’s about being productive, adding value and making some kind of difference, in each day and in each moment.

It’s not so much about the ‘what’ or ‘how’, it’s more about the why.

Why you do the things you do, what is it that’s driving you?

Yes, I get it, where do you even start?

The good news is, you don’t have to have it all figured out, you just need to move.

You’ll find that the secret ingredient to establishing purpose in your life is pretty straight forward and here it is:

Commitment.

Yes, that dirty word again, ‘commitment’.

Making a series of commitments to your self or others and then holding yourself to account.

Purpose is in reaching for something, in having something to aim at.

In taking on some responsibility, so you demand more of yourself or allowing others to come to depend on you.

It’s not an abstract concept.

If you want purpose in your life, then start by overcoming your fear of commitment.

Before you freak out, these don’t have to be big commitments, they could be a series of mini-commitments, rituals, things you call upon yourself to do, or to be.

A set of values you wish to embody more, boundaries you've established.

Waiting around for your purpose to strike you is probably not a great strategy.

Your purpose will come when you decide to go forth into the world.

When you activate yourself, show initiative and take on that next challenge, regardless of how small it may be.

So if purpose is what you’re after, then I suggest you start by making some commitments, real commitments and then holding your self to them.

That should give you enough reason to wake up every morning, and you won’t just begin to establish some purpose by doing that, you’ll find that your life all of a sudden also becomes more meaningful.

You get two in one, not bad
