Sweeping Up

27 Mar 2018

If you’ve ever been to Bali you’ll notice something interesting.

Everyone morning, without fail, day after day you will see people sweeping.

They sweep along the street outside of their homes and temples just before the sun rises.

It may seem like a strange ritual, but it’s so ingrained in the culture – it’s just what they do.

It’s a way of ushering in the new day.

Clearing space and cleansing.

Sweeping away the troubles and indiscretions of the day past and making space for the new.

Without this sweeping away - they are unable to receive the blessings bestowed upon them by the rising of the sun.

It is in cleaning up, that they can start anew

It’s also testament to the notion of death and rebirth.

Each sunset representing an ending and each sunrise the hope of a new beginning.

When you think about it, it’s a beautiful sentiment and one that’s deeply embedded in the way of life here.

You’d be well served by leaving the troubles of yesterday where they belong.

Similarly, drawing on a biblical quote – “do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have enough worry for itself. Each day has enough trouble on it’s own..”

Let tomorrow and every day be a new day in the truest of senses.
