Just for a second, put aside what the world may expect of you or what you may expect of others.
Just for a second, consider instead what it is you expect of yourself?
You see, everything begins with intention
It’s difficult to manifest anything of value, without first having the intention.
As Albert Einstein put it – “nothing happens until something moves”.
It’s pure physics.
But nothing can move unless there’s something that first sparks it into action.
That something (or someone) is you.
And expectation, leading to clear intention, is that spark.
Once ignited, movement, action ensues.
I’m familiar with the counter narrative – “don’t expect anything, and you won’t be disappointed”.
But life is not about avoiding disappointment
Your expectations can be managed, but to not have them at all, is akin to throwing in the proverbial towel.
It’s like giving up and checking out.
Not realising that you too have a part to play.
Your expectations of yourself is the foundation stone on which all else is built
It allows you to put the things of real worth into perspective.
To set standards, establish values.
Your role each day then, is to aim to live up to those expectations.
Having something to aim at and reach for is where purpose and meaning is ultimately found.
And properly aligning your life with your expectations, consistently meeting and/or exceeding them, is where you'll find that sense of fulfilment.
So don’t be afraid to expect things of your self
Because in the end, as a mere starting point, you need to be able to hold yourself accountable to some standard, no matter how small it may seem.
This is the beginning of the drive towards unleashing the fullness of your God given potential.
And this is where the journey is found, there's not much else to it.
