Accepting Defeat

Updated: Jan 10, 2020

We spend the majority of our existence in essence trying to conquer life.

Avoiding the reality that death beckons.

Death is the one unescapable truth.

We fight it, we avoid it, and we even try to defeat it, pretending that we are somehow immortal.

Hate to break it to you, but death is coming.

I know it sounds a little morbid, but death funnily enough has a way of humbling even the most powerful amongst us.

It’s your pride that convinces you that you can somehow defeat death.

Pride convinces you that you can actually recreate the universe in your own imagine.

That the very nature of things doesn’t apply to you,

That you are somehow above it all

Well, you’re not.

The question is, what do you do about that?

Well, the antidote to pride is humility.

Humility is more about letting go than it is about holding on.

In a sense, it’s about accepting defeat in good faith.

In understanding that you’re limited and that you don’t know it all, putting your whole existence into it’s proper context.

You can try and run, but the reality is, you can’t hide – your time is coming whether you believe it is or not.

The point is not to fear it, but rather to accept it and transcend it.

There is something very liberating in letting go and accepting your fate. In realizing that some things are beyond your control.

This is by no means an effort to diminish the significance of the individual, but rather to acknowledge that you (as an individual) are part of something much bigger than you could ever even begin to comprehend.

You only need to spend a night gazing up at the stars into infinity to realise that despite all your efforts, your role here is limited.

Reminding yourself of that may just give you a whole new perspective on life and a whole new way of approaching it.
