Are You Being Authentic? Taking Off Your Mask ..
Updated: Jan 10
If you’re ‘trying’ to be authentic, then chances are you’re probably not being authentic at all. There is no trying in authenticity, there just is. There is a fundamental distinction between ‘doing’ and ‘being’. Authenticity has much more to do with ‘being’ than it does with ‘doing’.
Whether it’s at work, in business or in your everyday life, you are often confronted with situations that will allow you to reflect on who you are and what it is you stand for (or value). Do you go with what feels right, or are your responses guided by some underling fears about what others might think?
The greater the alignment between who you (truly) are and what you do (how you act/respond), the greater your feeling of harmony. Being authentic allows you to establish trust, credibility, and ultimately make peace with yourself.
What’s important to realise is that sometimes authenticity is not about becoming, but rather about unbecoming. Searching for yourself may not produce dividends, because you already are (you’re there, you exist), you may just be missing the point or unable to see it, you may find yourself searching for something that is already there. It might be more beneficial to begin by shedding away some of your layers (or pretenses), that often cloud your judgments and provide an inaccurate reflection of your self, not allowing you to clearly see the being you are at your very core.
The key then is not to hold onto some form of identity or preconception of yourself, but rather to let go of everything that’s not really you and to be able sit comfortably with whatever is left.
If you’re not sure where to start, perhaps begin by acknowledging you may need some guidance, vulnerability is most certainly an authentic trait. Getting to know your self again feels like reconnecting with a long lost friend, if you need to embark on that journey, then there’s no greater time to begin than now.
