The gym has traditionally been seen as a place to get fit. The growing realisation is that health is much more than just physical fitness. The need to balance the body and mind is becoming increasingly relevant as we move into a new age of holistic health.
Having a physically fit body (for aesthetic reasons or other) is no longer enough and millions are turning to travel as a way to find the balance between body and mind. Booking a wellness holiday is quickly catching on as the hot new trend in travel. According to the Global Wellness Institute, wellness travel, although a relatively new term, is one of the fastest growing segments in the travel market.
Finding a renewed sense of meaning and purpose, being able to silence the mind, reduce stress and feel connected is all becoming as important as working out 3 or 4 times a week. Where the growth of Yoga is an indication of the mind body connection, Yoga itself has evolved away from its traditional classical practice to something more of an acrobatic feat and there is a now shift back towards an appreciation of simplicity and authenticity.
Health really is for everyone and health is more becoming commonly viewed 'holistically'.
People are becoming increasingly aware, they are more socially and environmentally conscious and inwardly focused - they are beginning to turn to travel as an extension of their lifestyle, not an escape from it. As people would have traditionally factored in a gym membership into their budgets, they are now seeing travel as an equally important contributor to their health.
Wellness travel is much more than embarking on Yoga retreat; it is an integrated experience that speaks directly to the individual – it can be a combination of physical or mindful practices, healing, cultural and spiritual immersion or nourishing the body and mind, through food or traditional treatments and remedies (among other things).
Travel is no longer seen as just site seeing or inactively sitting by the pool sipping cocktails, but more as a way to enriching life itself. Being able to draw on the experiences and integrate them into daily practice is seen as further added value. Travel is no longer just an expense, but an investment in ones personal growth and development.
