Find Out the Secret Formula to Managing Your Day

“I don’t have time..”, the all too common call of all those who wouldn’t know what to do with themselves on a rainy afternoon. One would assume that from the lack of time everyone has that the earth has somehow started orbiting the sun a little bit quicker than usual.

The simple and undeniable truth is, we are all given 24 hours in a day and this is where one little secret comes in. The secret is: we all, through decision or indecision, choose how we want to spend those 24 hours. Not quite the revelation you were expecting? Stay with me.

How we spend our time is a simple matter of priorities, either, not having our priorities right, or not having any priorities at all. Priorities are a matter of assigning a level of importance to things and a good place to start is by beginning to understand by what measure or guiding principles you conclude what is important and what is not.

That is, how do you decide what is important to you?

The big dirty word in modern pop culture is ‘values’; having ‘values’ just ain’t cool. But values are the lens in which we see the world through and the foundation on which we build your lives. Values allow us to set boundaries and make decisions based on what serves us and what doesn't – so in essence, we can coin the term “values based decision-making”.

Once you have a better understanding of yourself, what you value and what’s important to you, you can begin assigning a level of importance to things, friends and all kinds of events on a day to day, minute by minute basis. Learning to say yes and no at the appropriate times ensures that what you think, what you say and what you do is all aligned in perfect harmony.

Next time you find yourself saying, “I don’t have time,” let that be a trigger and try substituting it instead with “I didn’t prioritise that” and see how what works for you. So the only question that really remains is, how will you spend your 24?
